But before learning how to take care of eyelashes before, during, and after eyelash extensions, it is very important to understand the natural lash growth cycle. Knowing how natural lashes grow, rest, and shed helps explain why lash extensions fall out naturally and why proper care and regular refills are necessary.
Each natural eyelash follows its own growth cycle, which means lashes are constantly growing and shedding at different times. Here are the 3 stages of the Natural Lash Growth Cycle:
Stage 1: Anagen Phase (Growth Phase)
This is the active growth stage of natural lashes. New lashes grow from the follicle and this phase lasts approximately 30–45 days. Only about 30–40% of natural lashes are in this stage at any given time. Lashes in the anagen phase are not strong enough to support heavy extensions.
For lash artists, attaching extensions during this phase requires careful selection of appropriate length and weight.
2. Catagen Phase (Transition Phase)
This is a short transition stage between growth and rest. During this phase, lash growth stops and the follicle begins to shrink. Lashes become more stable and suitable for extensions.
Most lash extensions are ideally applied during this phase, which lasts about 2–3 weeks.
3. Telogen Phase (Resting & Shedding Phase)
This is the final stage before the natural lash sheds. During this phase, the lash no longer grows and eventually sheds naturally to make room for new growth. Shedding 1-5 lashes per day is completely normal.
This phase lasts approximately 3-4 months. When a natural lash sheds, the attached extension falls out with it, this is a natural process and not a sign of poor retention.

Before Eyelash Extensions: Preparation Is Key
What to Do Before Your Appointment:
- Clean your lashes thoroughly and remove all makeup, oils, and residue
- Avoid waterproof mascara for at least 24 hours before the appointment
- Do not curl your natural lashes
- Arrive with clean, dry lashes
What to Avoid:
- Oily skincare products around the eyes
- Lash serums or conditioners right before the appointment
During Eyelash Extensions: Protect Natural Lashes
During the application process, correct techniques and behavior matter. For Lash Artists:
- Use appropriate lash lengths, thicknesses, and curls based on natural lash strength
- Avoid overloading natural lashes
- Maintain proper isolation for each lash
- Use high-quality adhesives and tools in appropriate amounts
For Clients:
- Keep your eyes closed throughout the procedure
- Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes
- Communicate any discomfort immediately
After Eyelash Extensions: Maintenance & Daily Care
Proper aftercare is essential for long-lasting and healthy eyelash extensions. Need to do:
- First 2 hours, avoid saunas, steam, and swimming
- Clean your face gently as usual, but do not pull or rub your lashes
- Brush your eyelashes gently with a clean spoolie at the tips, avoiding the base where the glue is applied
- Avoid oil-based makeup and makeup removers
Avoid After Application:
- Waterproof mascara
- Oil-based skincare near the eyes
- Mechanical eyelash curlers
How Often Should You Get Lash Refills?
Lash extension retention depends on factors such as lash type, adhesive quality, natural lash growth cycle, and the artist’s technique. Eyelash extensions can last from 3 weeks up to 2 months. Refills can be done whenever lashes begin to shed or lose their shape.
